True Romance

Note from the author (that's me):  I used to write a little blog for several years called Fresh Unders.  I really missed writing it and decided (after a lot of encouragement from my 5 readers) that I would bring it back.  What better way to bring it back than with some fan favorites.  This post was originally published on August 29, 2012.  In honor of Valentine's Day, a little belated, here you go.

True Romance

It was just the four of us last Monday night.  We were tucked into a wooden booth at one of our favorite seafood restaurants on Long Beach Island.  One of those great places where there's a bucket of oyster crackers and a big sheet of paper over the tablecloth.  The kids were occupied with their coloring and Brian and I were sharing a bottle of white wine.

So I picked up a marker and I drew a little boat at Aidan's spot.  I wrote, "Aidan is a dreamboat." At Norah's place I drew a cute little ghost with a bow on her head.  Norah is BOO-tiful.  The kids got into the act and took a break from their tic-tac-toe.  Norah drew a big green heart and wrote, "Aidan is my best friend.  I love Mommy.  I love Daddy so much."

I said, "No, I love Daddy so much."  And I drew a big red heart with "Alicia Loves Brian" in it.

Brian smiled and took a sip of his wine.  He picked up a green marker and wrote the following message.  "Go Birds.  Beat the Pats."  Straight from his heart.

It was just a few nights later and we're sitting at a pizza place with a bottle of red.  We're at a table and I'm sitting against the wall looking out at the restaurant.  Brian is facing me.  We raise our glasses and the kids raise their cups.  We share a toast to family and a great beach day.  Then Brian says, "You have a great seat to people-watch.  All I get to look at is the wall."

Or me babe.  Or you could look at me, your lovely wife, sitting right across from you.

That, ladies and gentlemen, is true romance.  Take notes.

  1. If I ever compile a list of my favorite short stories I am including this. I laughed for a solid 60 seconds at the end.

Beer and an Ultrasound

A little story about Juliet's ultrasound, originally posted in August 2015.  Perhaps this accounts for some of her crazy personality? I had a 10:00 a.m. ultrasound on Tuesday morning.  I love going to see my little Baby New!  Since I had all sorts of complications with Aidan and Norah, I get to have an ultrasound every four weeks throughout my whole pregnancy, even though this is just one baby and not twins.  Yes, I'm sure.  It's the first question I asked when they said, "You're pregnant!"  I said, "With one baby?"  It's been confirmed.  Tuesday was also the first day of school for the kids.  They are in the 5th grade!  I just cannot believe it.  The time goes too quickly.  That is why we're having this baby.  So I can delay all the sad feelings that come with your kids getting older, put off having to deal with it and pretend it's not happening while I project all my suffocating emotions on this new little one. ...

Let's Delouse, Shall We?

Quarantine is like 60 Days In.  Without the shank. I can't freely discuss our quarantine because, number one, it violates HIPAA laws.  Number two?  There is no number two.  It's a law for a reason, people. Quarantine is to prison shows as covid is to lice.  (This is why this post came with a warning.) When you get covid, which I am neither confirming nor denying (see above: HIPAA) you have to tell people.  But just as in the case of lice, you don't really want to tell people.  Moreover, you're probably telling people that you are close to and friendly with and possibly related to by blood or marriage.  You feel awful.  "Hey guys, I know we were hanging out the other day, but we just found out Child A has lice."  They're like, "Oh no.  We feel so bad for you!  That's the worst." But at the same time as they are texting that to you, they're also yelling to their husband, "What the hell?!?  CHECK THEIR HEADS!  When was t...

Getting Shot at Target

What has the world come to that I'm getting a life saving vaccine in a Target dressing room? Look-I rarely, if ever, post about politics, controversial topics, religion and basically anything about which people feel quite strongly.  It is not that I don't feel strongly about these things.  I'm strong.  I feel strongLY, people.  But most of the time it doesn't get you very far except down into the mud with some troll you knew 20 years ago.  You may not have known that he was a troll back then because that term did not exist, but here they are livin' under your bridge while you're just trying to trip-trap over said bridge like the GOAT you are.   That's GOAT as in Greatest of All Time.  And yes, I hit you with fairy tale knowledge wrapped into some 2020 slang.  Boom. I scheduled the vaccine on my computer.  It was easy.  Just click to different sites 25 times, go to 14 pharmacy websites, create 14 new accounts, select an appointment...
